Teaching at Carnegie Mellon University

Short summary of teaching experiences as a postdoctoral associate at Carnegie Mellon University.

Instructor of Record

  • Math 21-120 - Differential and Integral Calculus (Fall 2022)
  • Math 21-268 - Multidimensional Calculus (Fall 2022)

The Fall 2022 semester provided my first opportunity to teach a large, lecture-hall style class for 21-120. This pushed me to scale up my active-learning style classroom to accommodate over 100 students.

Teaching at University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Short summary of teaching experiences as a graduate student at University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Associate Convener

  • Math 100A - Intermediate Algebra (Fall 2019/Spring 2020)
  • Math 106 - Calculus I (Fall 2020)

Associate conveners work closely with the relevant course convener to run the weekly course meetings and generally support the instructors on a day-to-day basis.

In Fall 2020, the associate convener position for Calculus I involved coordinating and supporting the 18 recitation leaders involved in the course. A majority of the recitation leaders had minimal prior teaching experience -- being either undergraduate students or first year graduate students -- so this position presented an opportunity to mentor new instructors.

During academic year 2019-20, I had the opportunity to partially redesign the course structure for the Intermediate Algebra course at UNL as part of my associate convener position. I instigated this change after teaching the course for a couple of semesters and discussing the shortcommings of the established structure with other instuctors of the course and the relevant course convener. In particular, we implemented a mastery based style of assessment: instead of traditional mid-term and final exams, the students had multiple chances to display mastery of each of the core learning objectives of the course throughout the semester.

Instructor of Record

  • Math 100A - Intermediate Algebra (Fall 2018/Spring 2019/Fall 2019/Spring 2020)
  • Math 106 - Calculus I (Fall 2021)

As an instructor of record, I focused on leading an active-learning style classroom. I kept lectures concise and focused a majority of class time on supporting the students as they work through exercises generated intentionally to provide proper scaffolding to understand the course material.

Teaching Assistant

  • Math 810T - Algebra for Algebra Teachers (Summer 2018)
  • Math 107R - Calculus II Recitation (Spring 2018)
  • Math 106R - Calculus I Recitation (Fall 2017/Fall 2020/Fall 2021)

As a recitation leader in the two calculus courses, I met with my students to work through exercises and deepen their understanding of the lecture material. For the Algebra for Algebra Teachers course, in addition to supporting the students in exercises I also had the opportunity to teach a few of the lectures under the direction of the instructor of the course.

Teaching Awards

  • Don Miller Outstanding Teaching by a Graduate Student

The Mathematics Department at UNL places a very high value on quality teaching, and since 1991 has honored outstanding teaching by a graduate teaching assistant with the Don Miller award.

Comments from Past Students

The comments received from the anonymous course evaluations at the end of each semester have the ability to make me feel just as honored as any department award. Below are a few snippets from past students' comments.

Hayley is very good at walking us through the steps of confusing problems. She isn't judgmental and made sure I understood correctly.
It has been super beneficial how active learning is welcomed. [Hayley] has been very patient and often encouraged us to participate. It was also helpful how there was easy contact when help was needed.
She was always eager to help and never made me feel dumb for asking a question I should have known the answer to. She was calming and supportive when I found myself frustrated with certain material. She has a caring personality and deep understanding of the material.
I went to her office hours every week for questions and she has well-formatted answers that allow me to understand the material. She is easy to talk to and I know I can ask complicated questions.
I've never been a math person, so I was nervous to start my first semester of college with a math class. Hayley helped me gain back a lot of confidence in myself. She is a great teacher.
