Involvement

Short summary of my service to mathematics departments and involvement in the math community.

When I joined the math department at Carnegie Mellon University, I was connected with Drs. Padi Fuster and Selvi Kara -- the creators of the Meet a Mathematician Website. The mission of Meet a Mathematician is to share stories of mathematicians from different backgrounds, especially from historically excluded groups, with the aim of introducing students to role models and fostering a sense of community. Together with a group of other mathematicians and K-12 teachers, we are working to develop lesson plans which utilize the videos from the website and aim to uplift students' mathematical identities.

UNL afforded me many opportunities to connect with our local mathematics community. I got to serve my fellow graduate students as a memeber of the mathematics Graduate Student Advisory Board (GSAB) from 2018 to 2020. As a group our primary function is to act as liasons between the administration and graduate students. However, we also organized events throughout the year for the graduate students, professors, and faculty to foster community in the department -- including a fall picnic to kick off the school year, a winter holiday party, and a spring ice cream social. Additionally, I participated in the Graduate Student Mentoring Program in the fall semesters of 2019, 2020, and 2021. This involved being paired with a first year graduate student and helping them adjust to graduate student life.

There have also been a lot of chances to work with undergraduate students outside the classroom. One aspect of this is working with undergraduates enrolled at UNL in the Math Resource Center -- a resource for students in first year math courses to receive help with their course work. The other is volunteering to help with undergraduates from other institutions at the Nebraska Conference for Undergraduate Women in Mathematics (NCUWM). I had the opportunity to attend NCUWM when I was an undergraduate and it inspired me to apply to and attend UNL for graduate school. It's great getting a chance to help facillitate this opportunity for other women in math.

Lastly, I've had opportunities to work with high school students interested in math. Every year, UNL hosts the Math Day event where high school students from across the state of Nebraska converge to participate in a good-natured team math competition. I've volunteered to help moderate the competitions every year I've been at UNL and it's great getting to meet the students from across the state and share in their excitement to solve math problems. Also, in Summer 2018 I worked as a camp counselor for the All Girls/All Math summer camp at UNL. This camp gives girls in grades 10-12 a supportive environment to explore math concepts together.
